Birthstones have been popular in one form or another for as long as people have celebrated the special day that they were born. Some believe that the original associations between gemstones and the months of the year evolved from 12 stones mentioned in the Bible, others say it represents the Twelve Apostles. Still others hold different beliefs. There are numerous traditions over the centuries that connect a particular gemstone with a month of the year. In 1912, the American National Jewelers Association created a list of accepted birthstones. These are usually referred to as "Traditional Birthstones". Religious and other groups maintain their own lists of birthstones.
For this reason, you will notice some stones listed under several months. I have listed here all the stones associated with each month (whether traditional, talismanic, or other).
