Lapis Lazuli Ball

This beautiful lapis lazuli was mined in Pakistan. Lapis lazuli is an ancient gem that has been mined for over 6000 years.

Lapis Lazuli Mineralogy

Lapis gemstones seem to sparkle, which occurs because of the inclusion of pyrite (also known as fool's gold). Though lapis is generally thought of as a bright blue gem stone, it can also be found in shades of red, purple and black.

Lapis Lazuli meaning in folklore

Because it is such an ancient gem, it has a fascinating history. Egyptian cultures buried the dead with a lapis scarab for protection in the afterlife. The earliest cultures valued lapis more than gold. Greeks spoke of an ancient sapphire that included gold, which is thought to be lapis. Some believed that dreaming of lapis foretold the arrival of a love that would always be faithful. It was used as a healing stone to relieve fevers, sore throats and burns.

Lapis lazuli is said to:

  • Encourages self awareness
  • Bestows wisdom and honesty
  • Reveals inner truth
  • Stone of friendship
